Schubert Polynomials and Bott-Samelson Varieties

چکیده

Schubert polynomials generalize Schur polynomials, but it is not clear how to generalize several classical formulas: the Weyl character formula, the Demazure character formula, and the generating series of semistandard tableaux. We produce these missing formulas and obtain several surprising expressions for Schubert polynomials. The above results arise naturally from a new geometric model of Schubert polynomials in terms of Bott-Samelson varieties. Our analysis includes a new, explicit construction for a Bott-Samelson variety Z as the closure of a B-orbit in a product of flag varieties. This construction works for an arbitrary reductive group G, and for G = GL(n) it realizes Z as the representations of a certain partially ordered set. This poset unifies several well-known combinatorial structures: generalized Young diagrams with their associated Schur modules; reduced decompositions of permutations; and the chamber sets of Berenstein-FominZelevinsky, which are crucial in the combinatorics of canonical bases and matrix factorizations. On the other hand, our embedding of Z gives an elementary construction of its coordinate ring, and allows us to specify a basis indexed by tableaux.

Bott-Samelson Varieties and Configuration Spaces

The Bott-Samelson varieties Z are a powerful tool in the representation theory and geometry of a reductive group G. We give a new construction of Z as the closure of a B-orbit in a product of flag varieties (G/B). This also gives an embedding of the projective coordinate ring of the variety into the function ring of a Borel subgroup: C[Z] ⊂ C[B]. In the case of the general linear group G = GL(n...

Vanishing theorem for the cohomology of line bundles on Bott-Samelson varieties

Bott-Samelson varieties were originally defined as desingularizations of Schubert varieties and were used to describe the geometry of Schubert varieties. In particular, the cohomology of some line bundles on Bott-Samelson varieties were used to prove that Schubert varieties are normal, Cohen-Macaulay and with rational singularities (see for example [BK05]). In this paper, we will be interested ...

The T–equivariant Cohomology of Bott–samelson Varieties

We consider the T–equivariant cohomology of Bott–Samelson desingularisations of Schubert varieties in the flag manifold of a connected semi–simple complex algebraic group of adjoint type with maximal torus T . We construct a combinatorially pure (in the sense of T. Braden and R. Macpherson) sheaf on the Bruhat graph of the associated Weyl group such that its global sections give the T–equivaria...

Desingularizations of Schubert varieties in double Grassmannians

Let X = Gr(k, V ) × Gr(l, V ) be the direct product of two Grassmann varieties of kand l-planes in a finite-dimensional vector space V , and let B ⊂ GL(V ) be the isotropy group of a complete flag in V . One can consider B-orbits in X in analogy with Schubert cells in Grassmannians. We describe this set of orbits combinatorially and construct desingularizations for the closures of these orbits,...

Frobenius Splitting for Schubert Varieties

This thesis presents an expository account of the use of Frobenius splitting techniques in the study of Schubert varieties. After developing the basic theory of Frobenius splitting, we show that the Schubert and Bott-Samelson varieties are split and use this to derive geometric consequences in arbitrary characteristic. The main result highlighted is that Schubert varieties are normal, Cohen-Mac...
